Two Wins, A Draw and Three Defeats!
Date: Friday 22 January 2010
A busy Tuesday afternoon with teams travelling to King's School Canterbury and entertaining teams from King's - Rochester and Canterbury, and Dover College.
Under 14 boys' hockey players played well at home to hold King's C to just 0 - 2 at half-time, but despite the best efforts of Theron Tickridge ('outstanding'), Matthew Roberts, Louis Glynn-Williams and Harry Dunning, the flood gates opened in the face of more powerful and experienced opponents.
Under 15 boys earned a draw down at King's with Andrew Pittard's second-half equaliser cancelling out the King's first-half strike. Daniel Gladwin and Robbie Stewart were our saviours in a dreadful first period, but after the interval we picked it up, made better decisions, and in the end deserved the point.
Under 15 netballers struggled again against one of the best sides in the county from King's Rochester; we managed the grand total of three goals, King's netted forty. Say no more!
Much more encouraging was the result of the Under 14 match, where St Edmund's came out well on top, winning 23 - 8! The goals were shared by Misses George and Al Shaikh, and team confidence is growing fixture by fixture.
The boys' First V squash team went down to King's with high hopes of a victory, with Arnie Dunning restored to the side, but plans were frustrated by the early losses suffered by James Hitchcock and Declan Connor. This meant that Harry Dunning would need to win, but, perhaps worn down by his earlier efforts on the hockey field, he also went down, leaving our only points to be won by Dunning (senior), and Skipper Henry Withrington. A bit of a deflating 2 - 3 defeat.
Ther best result by a margin was the 1st VII win over Dover College. Arabella Pemberton's absence demanded a reshuffle, with Natasha Hopper moving to goal attack, Lulu Summerfield to centre, and Deveena Pithia coming in as goal defence. All out attack throughout the four quarters resulted in a 41 - 3 victory. Ellie Blanning and Natasha Hopper shot precisely, and the defence was under little pressure. I left after the first quarter, when we were 10 - 1 up. I predicted a 42 - 6 victory; in fact, it was even better than that in the end!
