'Othello' - The Bloomsbury Theatre

Date: Thursday 18 October 2007

Another day - another theatre trip, as members of the Upper Sixth English Literature class braved the London rush hour traffic in the vicinity of Hyde Park and Paddington to get to the Bloomsbury Theatre to see the latest London production of 'Othello'.

Sadly, as far as Head of Department Jon Dagley was concerned, a superb production was far more worthy than an audience - average age 18+ - which responded inappropriately, and was more interested in mobile phones than Shakespeare's drama.

The exception to this criticism was our own pupil body, including one who, having offered his own declamation of Othello's final speech in class, was thrilled to hear it delivered, on stage, by the genuine article. The young actors who took the parts of Iago and Othello himself were deemed 'outstanding'.

Front row seats, in the thick of the action, more than compensated for the travel tribulations, and a late 12.15am return to Canterbury. Everyone in School today, I hope!
