Tennis - Glanvill and Aberdare Cups
Date: Monday 19 April 2010
The senior tennis season began on Wednesday 21st April with first round matches in two national knock-out competitions, the Glanvill and Aberdare Cups.
Both of the St Ednund's teams progressed to the second round with good wins over Queen Elizabeth's GS from Faversham (girls) and Sutton Valence (boys).
The girls' IV - Katie McNie, Charlotte Lench, Sofia Williams, and debutante Deveena Pithia - won 5 - 1, with one of the doubles going to a 'championship tie-break', won 13 - 11 by McNie and Lench. All the other rubbers were clear cut two set wins - and one defeat!
The boys - Harry Callaway, Will Hollis, Henry Withrington, and Charlie Burns - won the first three rubbers of the afternoon, but it was a hard fight in round two, and it took a determined effort from Will Hollis, winning 6 -2, 6 - 4 to secure the tie 4 - 2, after Callaway had lost his singles, and the pairing of Burns and Withrington had also gone down after a tie-break.
An excellent start to the season; matches against King's Rochester take centre court this afternoon.
