'This House believes Abortion is Wrong'

Date: Tuesday 27 April 2010

The first Forum debate of the term took place during Monday lunchtime, and involved, for the first time, a group of Lower Fifth pupils, who responded positively to the challenge of organising and preparing the cases for and against the motion.

With Tom Hess taking the chair, Matthew Farmer and Philip Ross were given the task of proposing the motion, and Stephen Draper and Harry Dunning led the opposition.

In front of a somewhat sparse audience - Lower Fifth boys and some interested staff - the quality of the debate was remarkably high given the inexperience of both teams. Dr Caiazza, the staff organiser, paid particular tribute to the Draper/Dunning duumvirate who answered questions from the floor with real attention to detail.

The outcome was a tie 3 votes each, with four abstentions. The nervous participants did themselves proud; we are all looking forward to next year when they can come back as Middle Fifth debaters!
