Unusual Suppers at Choir House!

Date: Thursday 29 April 2010

During the second week of the summer term, Choir House enjoyed two unusual suppers.

On Monday we paid homage to the Benedictine monastery at Bec in Normandy by eating supper in contemplative silence. Canterbury Cathedral’s link with Bec comes about through St Anselm, who was abbot at Bec before becoming Archbishop of Canterbury during William II’s reign at the very end of the 11th century. The choir had visited Bec during last academic year and enjoyed a silent supper there with the monks. On Monday this week we entered our dining room in silence, stood for grace, and listened to a Bach violin concerto throughout the meal. Form 4 boys, who eat their supper earlier, were served by Mr Lambert and they, in turn, served the older boys after their “6.10pm” rehearsal.

On Wednesday we enjoyed a Mad Hatters’ Tea Party. The tables were laid with colourful tablecloths, party food and fruit punch flowed from the tea pots, but the creativity and inventiveness of the hats won the day. A small prize was given to Hayden Cox for his “hat” – The Stig.
