Kent Wildlife Trust Awards
Date: Tuesday 6 November 2007
The school hosted the annual Gardening for Wildlife awards presentation on behalf of Kent Wildlife Trust and Canterbury City Council.
The headmaster introduced Pauline Heathcote, from Kent Wildlife Trust, who spoke about the scheme. The Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress of Canterbury attended and presented the awards to 17 awards winners and their guests, offering his congratulations to the winners and his support for the scheme.
Amongst the winners was Mr Andrew Knowler, our Head Gardener, who won a silver award.
Andrew also received a special award on behalf of the school for efforts to manage our green spaces for the benefit of the environment and wildlife, whilst maintaining them as functional school grounds to be used and enjoyed by pupils and staff. It is hoped that this special award will encourage this work to continue with the increased involvement of the wider school community.
There are 5 of these special awards given out annually in Kent to individuals or organisations to recognise special achievements within and beyond the scope of the Gardening for Wildlife Awards. It is a special honour to receive one.
The award itself is a wood carving created from trees blown down in the storm of 1987. Ours features a barn owl swooping to catch a wood mouse.
