A Great Day for the Papes!
Date: Thursday 29 April 2010
Three cricket matches, one tennis match, and one great day for Ben Pape, captain of cricket, and his sister Charlotte who was man of the match, not for St Edmund's, but for Sir Roger Manwood's School as their Under 15 side knocked St Edmund's out of the Miskin County Cup competition.
A tennis '1st VI' went to Sutton Valence, but with two players in the cricket team, and the skipper down with tonsilitis, a makeshift squad went to the Weald and lost 2 - 7, after a good afternoon's sport. The two sets were claimed by David Foord and Oli Kirkness, and by Des Tang and Henry Withrington.
The SES cricket 2nd XI took on King's Rochester at home, and suffered a 40 run defeat in a 25/25 over match, which, from the state of the scorebook, clearly ended in the rain! King's ran up 162 - 8, with Amar Barkat snaffling 3 - 16, and Lewis Piper, returning from the sunny climes of Barbados, taking 2 - 16. In reply, lots of players got starts, but no-one could play the long match-winner that was needed. Six in double figures, but only Piper (21) getting beyond the teens.
Last year the Under 15s reached the semi-finals of the Miskin Cup, and losing then on a technicality. Hopes of a cup run were shattered when Manwood's came, saw, and conquered on the Alps pitch. The scorebook is incomprehensible, but it is clear that Manwood's batted first and may have scored 165 - 8, with Joel Whitewood picking up a couple of wickets, but, after a good opening stand between Max Bungay (55) and Robert Page (29), no-one else could make any contribution. As for Charlotte Pape - and the other two girls in the Manwood's side - Charlotte scored a useful 20, and then took 6 - 16 in four overs! Man of the Match in anyone's book!
As for Pape the Elder, he led his 1st XI to an eight wicket victory over King's Rochester, on their 'Paddock'. King's batted sensibly and well to reach 195 - 2 in their 35 overs. Pape himself was the tightest of the attack, taking 1 - 19 in his seven, and held a sharp catch at cover off Anglin's bowling. The run chase became a canter as Stone and Pape went off at express pace against an increasingly demoralised attack. Stone fell in the 10th over for 31, to usher in Harry Callaway whose esoteric combination of flowing shots and nicks through the slip area brought him to a fifty with the winning shot in the 25th over. Pape reached 74 before holing out to long leg, allowing the flamboyant entry of our 'Beefy' - Max Anglin, who in seven scoring shots raced to 31*. An eight wicket win, but a lot to learn, especially in the field, before we go to Cranbrook on Saturday week.
