Do Something Different Every Week Club - Gliders, Sundials, Chompybots & LEDs

Date: Tuesday 1 June 2010

Most recently in Do Something Different Every Week Club we made tumblewing gliders. We watched a video of a man making a glider using pages from an old telephone book and then we used thin origami paper to build our own aircraft. We learned how to fly our gliders with the help of the man on the video, who used a large sheet of card to help his plane glide. Some of us were able to make ours fly quite well!

Previously we made sundials. After making them using paper and card, we discussed how to find north (some suggestions were to look halfway between where the sun rose and where it set, use a string and magnet to make our own compass or to find someone who has a compass). Fortunately, we had a compass so we were set!

In the rare few moments of sunshine this afternoon, we went outside and aligned our sundials pointing north. And, at exactly 1:30 pm the sundials read...12:30. So we learned about summer time and how to allow for that with our sundials.

Previously we made Chompybots, a type of chomping robot made out of paper.

We have also experimented with and constructed using

coloured LEDs and batteries.
