Inter-House Bridge-Building Competition

Date: Saturday 12 December 2009

The inter-house bridge-building competition was fantastic! Building on the success of last year's tower building competition, it was an extremely popular event. What a hive of activity and excitement there was in the Lower School classrooms that afternoon! It was good to see a good number of teachers and parents observing proceedings.

The object of the exercise was to build a bridge to span the widest gap possible. The winner would be the widest span. The only materials each engineer or team of engineers could use were two handfuls of maize packing puffs and 100 wooden cocktail sticks. There were in fact two parallel competitions with categories for Lower School (Forms 3-5) and Upper School (Forms 6-8).

The Lower School winners were Alexander Roe and Jack Selmon (Becket), whose bridge spanned 107 cm, and the Upper School winner was Nathan Gambrill (Marlowe), whose bridge spanned 102 cm. Congratulations to them and to all who took part: all participants earned points for their houses.
