Mountain Biking Club, Michaelmas Term

Date: Saturday 16 October 2010

In the Mountain Biking Club this term our Friday evening rides have taken us along a variety of routes in Clowes Wood and Church Wood. Each week we sought out different routes and one ride at a time we extended both distance and range of technical skills. We laboured up some big hills and learned to keep going rather than dismount and walk, and we learned about risk assessment on the fast descents. We loved the beautiful sunny autumn evenings in the woods and we loved even more some epic rides in really grim, wet and muddy conditions...

Form 5 Victorian Day at Quex Park

Date: Thursday 14 October 2010

On Thursday 7th October Form 5 arrived at school in Victorian outfits to match the theme of our day out. We went to Quex Park and it was a very informative day. I learnt about the Powell-Cotton family and we learnt how the Powell-Cotton family was landed gentry in Victorian Times. They were a family with unique eyes for nature but the most famous of the family is Major Percy Powell-Cotton who had a keen eye for nature and science. By combining these two loves he created the Powell-Cotton Museum - an interesting and amazing place with stuffed animals and films packed full of information on what he found on his hunting trips in Africa and India. I found when I walked into the room that the animals were frozen in time and it was amazing how many different species there were when you look closer. We learnt in a fun way and interacted with characters of the house. The guide said a funny punch line every chance he got! The day was filled with lots of smiles and I would recommend it as a fun day out...

Form 8 Cross-Curricular Study Tour to France

Date: Thursday 14 October 2010

The annual Form 8 French study tour went exceptionally well in September. Perhaps we had a narrow escape from a miserable Channel crossing when, only a few hours later, a terrific gale blew up, making for a spectacular scene
at the beach near our hostel on the Picardy coast on the first evening. Earlier in the day during our visit to Boulogne we had been very impressed with the current design of the garden in the central square of the old city: it was set out as a
"jardin de Gulliver", with gigantic gardening implements and vegetables. Everyone loved posing for photos next to them.

Yesterday's inaugural St Edmund's Primary Schools’ Year 6 Maths Competition was a resounding success! Teams from six local primary schools met for an exciting afternoon of maths problem solving. For 25 minutes, the four members from each team were given a series of problems to solve, one at a time. Once the team worked out a solution, the team's runner ran the answer to one of our Lower Sixth and Upper Fifth judges and were either given the next problem to solve or given the chance to try again. ...
