On Sunday, 6th May 2012, Zara Petts of Baker House L5, joined her windsurfing friends at Hythe and Saltwood Sailing Club in a charity event to raise money for cancer research. Windsurfers across the UK; from the British Olympic Windsurfing Team to the youngest sailors, participated in races and challenges in aid of W4CR – Windsurfers for Cancer Research. As well as fundraising, Zara's efforts won her the junior trophy. ...

A group of listeners and inquisitors from U5, L6 and U6 listened to an entertaining and fascinating talk by Judge St John Stevens, parent and Judge in the Crown Court, on Wednesday evening in the Drawing Room. The talk covered how the Law works, the Judge St John Steven’s own route through the early days as student and pupil to his work as a barrister and outlines of the sorts of cases he has had to deal with in his life as a judge and lawyer home and abroad. Judge St John Stevens had worked in many places, including in the Caribbean where superstition still forms part of the social fabric and in Central London in important cases involving difficult decisions and imaginative solutions. These ranged from the sobering to the hilarious, the high profile to the exotic and provoked excellent questions from, amongst others, Michael Ho, Charlotte Austin and Julia Gawecka. Though a small scale talk it was valuable and provided an excellent insight into the professional world of a supposedly dry subject...

BioScience trip to University of Kent

A group of St Edmund's scientists visited the University of Kent on Wednesday 2nd May to produce genetically modified bacteria that glow in the dark. Dr Tobias von der Haar took us through the procedure to insert a gene for a fluorescent protein from jellyfish into the E. coli bacteria. The group used the university equipment with precision and were very impressed with the results of their work...
