Fairtrade
St Edmund's is extremely proud to support so many charities and the Fairtrade organisation is no exception. Fairtrade is an organisation that is currently benefiting the lives of many in less fortunate communities by giving farmers more profit from their harvests. This has a profound effect on the community as more money is introduced and from that better education and healthcare can follow. For more information on Fairtrade log onto the Fairtrade website www.fairtrade.org.uk.
In September 2011, St Edmund's received official confirmation that the school has been awarded Fairtrade School status. This means that we are committed to promoting the sale of Fairtrade goods and developing an understanding of the aims of the Fairtrade Foundation through the education of our students.
The committee offers pupils the chance take hold of responsibility whilst being able to make a difference to the school community and the communities of less economically developed countries. The committee is run by pupils with a President, Vice-President and Secretary. It also teaches skills such as;
- Committee skills
- Planning and developing events and new ways of promoting Fairtrade
- Teamwork and organisational skills
- As well as of course promoting important understanding of helping others and being charitable

Fairtrade Fortnight 2011
To promote Fairtrade cotton St Edmund’s held a fashion show on Monday, 7th March in the hall. Each tutor group decorated a ‘Fairtrade T Shirt’ and the best T Shirt was modelled by one of their pupils on the catwalk at the show. The winning group won a selection of Fairtrade Chocolate with which to celebrate their success.
Event: 30 June 2011
A Fairtrade stand at the School Triathlon conducted a survey to see if pupils could tell which of two chocolates was Fairtrade. The object was to show that Fairtrade chocolate, Cadbury’s Milk Chocolate, was as good as, if not tastier than, other chocolate. Many of those who took part assumed that the Fairtrade chocolate would not taste as good and were surprised when they chose the wrong one.
