Library

2017_Library GeneralThe Senior School Library at St Edmund’s is a well-equipped resource, with over 12,000 titles on its shelves, as well as a wide range of English and foreign language magazines and periodicals. There is a broad selection of fiction to please all readers, from the more reluctant to the passionate, and a DVD collection which consists of over 800 titles, from Shakespearean tragedies to Hollywood blockbusters. Alongside the older established subject areas, there has been investment in new and emerging subjects.

We aim to create a welcoming atmosphere in the Library, as well as ensuring that it is a suitable working environment. Pupils can choose individual workstations (carrels) or share double tables; alternatively a computer suite is available for those wishing to carry out further web-based research. Those with laptops or pupils borrowing the library laptops can also enjoy access to St Edmund’s Wi-Fi. Full access to the library catalogue is available 24 hours a day through the web-hosted library database at www.tinyurl.com/stedseclipse. Eclipse Library Management System also provides access to authoritative websites to enhance student’s research and learning skills.

Alternatively the iMLS app can be downloaded on smartphones or tablets for quick and convenient searching of resources.

The library also has a lively programme of clubs, competitions, author talks and book fairs, with suggestions for new initiatives always welcomed.

The library works closely with Kent Libraries and the nearby University of Kent to assist pupils conducting higher level research, such as those carrying out the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ).

Within the Library, readers can always seek guidance from the Librarian in research skills and choosing fiction, and there are a number of reading lists, displays and recommended reads to direct pupils to relevant and interesting stock. Alternatively our excellent library monitors are often on hand to offer friendly and informed advice.

Stationery items and discounted books for sale are available to pupils in our bookshop, open throughout the day. For those pupils wishing to, there is also a book ordering service available and a regularly distributed book catalogue for Fifth Formers (years 9-11) to peruse.

The Library is staffed between 8.00 am and 4.30 pm, and is open between 8.30 am and 10:30 pm each day.
