English as an Additional Language (EAL)
St Edmund’s welcomes pupils from all around the world, and in support of this, there is a dedicated English as an Additional Language (EAL) Department in Junior School to help those pupils whose first language is not English, and who require language development during their earlier years at the school.
Our small, but thriving EAL Department in Junior School, offers individual and small group tuition which is tailored to meet the specific needs for each EAL pupil. The small class setting allows the teachers to offer a high level of individual care and attention. There is a strong emphasis upon the key skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking, as well as grammar and vocabulary. Pupils also have the opportunity to sit external Cambridge ESOL examinations (for example, KET, PET or First) in preparation for the next stage of their studies.
