Through our style of teaching we aim to build pupil motivation as a means of enabling pupils to reach their full potential whatever their level of ability. We adopt a variety of teaching strategies that are specifically suited to the needs of individual pupils. Relating mathematics to real-life situations, improving basic numeracy and incorporating ICT can all be used as effective tools to increase interest and confidence in the subject. Central to the ethos of Mathematics teaching at St Edmund’s is the demonstration to pupils that maths is fun and that it can be taught and learned in an interesting and stimulating manner.
We enter a range of maths competitions outside the school every year and we run our own Year 6 challenge for local primary schools as well as an annual inter-house mathematics competition. We also host Maths Masterclasses in conjunction with the Royal Institution in London and the University of Kent. These lively sessions are for gifted mathematicians in Years 5 and 6 at St Edmund’s and other local schools and involve and a range of exciting games, activities and investigations which enable pupils to develop their mathematical reasoning and problem solving skills.
Pupils have access to the mymaths website via their own individual username and password. This enables them to have full access both at home and at school to a range of mathematical activities for revision and for fun.
