The Junior School benefits from the superb drama facilities and technical support available at St Edmund’s and these enable us to put on splendid and large scale annual productions, often musicals. Casts of 50-60 pupils are normal, supported by a live band and well-trained stage, backstage and technical crews. Recent Junior School shows have included Annie, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Iolanthe, My Fair Lady, Bugsy Malone, Guys and Dolls, Johnny and the Dead and Thoroughly Modern Mille.
Whilst these large-scale productions are usually for pupils in Forms 6-8, children in the Lower School (Years 3-5) undertake regular smaller scale productions in year group shows, at the parents’ Christmas assembly, and sometimes in their own a major production.
Separate from the major productions, there are drama clubs offering workshop skills in both the Lower School (Forms 3-5) and Upper School (Forms 6-8).
There are also opportunities for those who enjoy public speaking. In Form 8 some pupils prepare for and sit the English Speaking Board examinations, there is an annual well-attended Poetry Evening, and some years a team of pupils competes in the Thanet Festival.
