Teaching Staff

The Junior School PE department comprises enthusiastic and highly qualified staff including:

Linda Relf – Head of Junior School Sport

Linda Relf wLinda is now in her tenth year in this role. She is also the Girls’ Housemistress, dealing with pastoral issues on a day to day basis as well as teaching some Science and Religious Studies.

Linda studied at St Luke’s College, University of Exeter, gaining a BA/BEd (Hons). She has taught in both the State and the Independent sectors, including periods abroad, teaching in New Zealand and for 5 years in Kenya.

Linda’s main sports are Netball, Hockey and Athletics  and recently she has participated in Triathlons around the UK, fundraising for Leukaemia Research and The Royal Marsden Hospital, and she is a keen club golfer.  She has been instrumental in establishing our successful Junior School Triathlon competition as well as Ski Trips to Europe and beyond.  One of her particular successes has been expanding the numbers of pupils participating in school teams throughout the Junior School.

Chris Penn – Head of Junior School Boys’ Games & PE

Chris Penn wAfter a successful 15 year professional cricket career at Kent County Cricket Club, Chris moved into coaching and facility development with the English Cricket Board, and specialist coaching in fast bowling with national age group squads, Kent and the England Women’s Cricket Team.

He joined the School in 2001 and is Head of Boys’ Games in the Junior School, teaching games in the Senior School as well. He teaches PSHE (Personal, Social and Health Education) and spent five years running the Junior School boarding house. Chris has established annual sports and team building trips to Europe, increased the number of competitive matches for boys of all abilities and initiated the new Junior School sports scholars’ programme.

Chris was a schoolboy and Under 21 cricket international and has played and coached sport throughout the world including in the township of Soweto, South Africa. His major sports are Cricket and Football, playing football and rugby as a youngster for Dover FC and Dover Rugby Club.

 

Simon Buckingham wSimon Buckingham – Teacher of Games & PE

Simon joined St Edmund’s 10 years ago, having studied in Natal, South Africa.  As well as PE and Games, he has taught English, History and Religious Studies. Simon teaches sport across both Junior and Senior Schools and he is now Deputy Head of Boarding at St Edmund’s as well.  He is an invaluable member of the staff team that supervises our extensive overseas activity trips.

Simon is a keen and enthusiastic sportsman and leads the boys’ Hockey programme in the Junior School. His major sports are Cricket and Hockey, with a passion for Rugby which is taught as part of the Junior School PE rotation, rather than in the Games programme. He plays local club cricket and golf.
