Open Day – 28 September 2013

It is hard to believe that after the huge success of Open Day 2012 with the spitfire showcase and flyover that the school could match that visual and educational feast in 2013.

DSC_0515As always, St Edmund’s has risen to the challenge.  The unique showcase for the 2013 Open Day was based around technological change of motor vehicles, with a wonderful show of classic cars and a vintage double decker bus; provided by parents, former pupils and friends of St Edmund’s and the Dover Transport Museum. Visitors enjoyed the opportunity to experience the design of a wide variety of vehicles and interact with the proud owners.

DSC_0380The Design Technology department showcased their Greenpower race car Fast Eddy which was designed and built by Junior and Senior School pupils. It looked fantastic with its smart graphics and streamlined design. Members of the race team, dressed in their impressive red St Edmund’s overalls proudly discussed the design, making and race plans of their car, impressing visitors with their knowledge and enthusiasm. Additionally, in the marquee with Fast Eddy was a six track Scalextric that provided much interactive fun.

Visitors to the school were once again treated to a fabulous selection of performances from the Music Department.  On arrival St Edmund’s Big Band entertained guests whilst they enjoyed breakfast and met their guides for the day.  After the Head’s address in the main hall, the Cathedral Choristers delighted their audience followed by another fabulous performance from the Chamber Choir. Soloists performed wonderful pieces in the marquee throughout the morning.

DSC_0542Academic areas across the school provided vibrant displays and fascinating examples of subject based activity.  Pupils demonstrating scientific experiments impressed all who engaged with them, with their knowledge, skill and enthusiasm for the various specialist areas.  Artists, ceramicists and photographers showed the skills and creativity behind exhibited work with a range of activities including a photo-shoot in the professional quality photography studio.  A variety of Sports could be viewed throughout the morning on the wonderful new all weather pitch as well as in the Sports Hall.

The first ever St Edmund’s inter-house Business pitch competition was enjoyed by many visitors.  Two pupils from each of the four Houses presented innovative ideas to four judges, local business professionals; Philip Gambrill, Anghared Green and Chris Symons, joined by William Bacon (a former pupil).  The event was keenly contested with all four houses speaking with confidence, generating and presenting fine, original ideas, providing great optimism for future enterprise activity within the school and beyond. It was a close run competition but the eventual winners were Max Macdonald and Keir Kernighan from Watson House.

DSC_0420Visitors were served a splendid lunch in the marquee and had the opportunity to talk to senior staff at the end of a wonderful morning. The whole school; Pre-prep, Junior and Senior had opened its doors and welcomed many guests (form all over Kent, London and beyond), providing a taste of the inspiring educational and extra curricular opportunities St Edmund’s consistently provides. Staff and pupils impressed guests with their friendly, informative and engaging representation of the school that is a true reflection of the family ethos St Edmunds is so proud of.

Whilst Open Day is a good way to experience an overview of the whole school, we look forward to welcoming back families for a personal visit and to enjoy the school on a normal working day.
