Frank Mason County Hockey Tournament

Congratulations to the 1st Xl boys’ hockey team for their win in the Plate section of the U18 Frank Mason County hockey tournament last week, a fantastic achievement having played against some of the largest boys’ schools in the county. In the group stages, St Edmund’s drew with Eltham College 1-1, with a superb goal from Samik Shrestha and beat Harvey Grammar 2-0, with goals from Rob Gain and Fred Northover.

Although the stronger team against Simon Langton, it was an unfortunate 1-2 loss with a goal again from Samik Shrestha. Finally, a 0-3 loss to Langley Park who were a very well drilled side. This took us through to the knockout Plate section, where the team came across the Sir John Williamson Mathematical School in the first game. A converted short corner from Ben Shepherd followed by an equaliser from Sir John Williamson led to penalty flicks. St Edmund’s were the more successful team in this shoot out and this sent them through to the next match against Skinner’s School.  We went 2-0 down to Skinner’s but then a converted penalty from Ben Shepherd and a goal from Samik Shrestha, took the boys to another penalty shoot out.

Louis Charousset deserves plaudits on an impressive performance in goal, saving four penalty strokes in these two separate shoot outs to send the boys through to the final. We knew that Sutton Valence School were strong opposition, having lost to them 3-5 in recent weeks. But a high press led to the first goal, with Rob Gain converting the opportunity. Sutton Valence equalised before Ben ran the ball down the left hand side and finished with a reverse stick smash into the bottom right hand corner. A 2-1 victory to St Edmund’s and the addition of the first bit of silverware for the 1st Xl for quite some time.
