St Edmund's

Pre-Reception & Reception

“At St Edmund’s, we believe that education is about more than academic success. By encouraging pupils to explore their passions and take on responsibility from an early age, we help them grow into confident, compassionate leaders.” Kathleen Davis, Head of Junior School

Curriculum

In Pre-Reception and Reception, children begin their learning journey in a nurturing and stimulating environment where curiosity, creativity and confidence are encouraged every day. The curriculum follows the Early Years framework Stage and combines structured learning in reading, writing and mathematics with a strong emphasis on play-based exploration and practical discovery.

Children learn through engaging themes, hands-on activities and outdoor experiences, helping them develop in the prime areas (independence, social skills and a love of learning). Specialist lessons such as PE and music enrich the week, while access to outdoor spaces allows pupils to explore and experiment in a safe and inspiring natural setting.

School Life

These first years are about helping children feel happy, secure and excited to come to school. Specialist lessons including PE and Music add variety to the week, while new Early Years play areas provide opportunities for naturalistic play, games and active exploration.

Children are encouraged to make friends, try new things and become increasingly confident within the St Edmund’s community.

Growing in Confidence

We nurture the whole child from the very beginning. Through strong relationships, kindness and encouragement, children develop independence, social skills and a love of learning. Our pastoral approach ensures every child is known and supported as an individual, creating the foundations they need to flourish as they move through the Junior School.

I think the hard work over the summer months has been nothing short of transformational. Junior School Parent
