St Edmund’s Gala Concert 2026: An Evening of Musical Excellence

St Edmund’s School’s annual Gala Concert, held at the Colyer Fergusson Hall, was a resounding success, showcasing the exceptional musical talent of pupils alongside staff, alumni, and members of the wider community.

Directed by Spencer Payne, Director of Music, the concert opened with a confident and dynamic performance of the first movement of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 by the Symphony Orchestra, immediately setting a high standard for the evening.

The first half featured a diverse programme of solo and ensemble performances from Upper Sixth musicians and the Chamber Choir. Highlights included expressive instrumental solos and accomplished vocal performances, demonstrating both technical skill and musical sensitivity. The Chamber Choir’s performance of Faire is the Heaven was particularly notable for its control and tonal richness.

Following the interval, the combined choirs and orchestra presented Vivaldi’s Gloria, the centrepiece of the evening. This vibrant and uplifting work, performed in its full scale, brought together a large ensemble including St Edmund’s Chapel Choir, Chamber Choir, Junior Choirs, Choral Society, and choristers, as well as singers from St Faith’s School. The result was a powerful and joyful performance, with moments of both grandeur and intimacy.

The concert was a testament not only to the musical excellence within the school, but also to the spirit of collaboration that defines St Edmund’s musical community. The involvement of local musicians and partner schools added further depth to an already impressive programme.

The evening concluded to warm applause from a full audience, marking another outstanding Gala Concert and a highlight of the school’s musical calendar.
