Curriculum

From Year 3 onwards, pupils encounter increasingly ambitious ideas and are encouraged to think critically, question and make connections across their learning. They explore how civilisations and societies develop, examining themes including democracy, fairness, identity, community, freedom, justice and sustainability. By Year 6, pupils are engaging with complex questions about human responsibility and considering how choices made in the past can shape our world today.

STEM further develops problem-solving and collaboration through hands-on exploration, while Music, Drama and the Performing Arts provide opportunities for creativity, self-expression and performance. Together, these experiences combine strong academic foundations with the skills pupils need for an increasingly complex world.

School Life

School life becomes increasingly broad and exciting as pupils progress through Years 3–6. An extensive co-curricular programme includes opportunities across sport, Music, Drama, STEM and a wide variety of clubs and activities. Pupils can explore established interests, discover something new and increasingly take on challenges and leadership opportunities.

Sport is also an important part of Junior School life, with an emphasis on participation, confidence and enjoyment alongside opportunities to represent St Edmund’s in competitive fixtures. Pupils learn about teamwork, resilience and striving for their personal best.

Growing in Confidence

Across Years 3–6, pupils are encouraged to become increasingly independent, resilient and responsible. They learn to challenge themselves, contribute positively to their community and recognise their own individual strengths and talents.

By Year 6, we want pupils to leave the Junior School not only academically prepared for the next stage of their education, but as confident, compassionate young people with the character, curiosity and independence to embrace the opportunities ahead. This reflects the Junior School’s wider aim to help every child grow in confidence, explore their interests and develop the character needed to flourish at school and beyond.
