Rev. Joy Atkins
Chaplain
I started my working life as a teacher of Religious Studies and English in Tunbridge Wells, quickly finding myself drawn into the pastoral side of school life, leading assemblies and being Assistant Head of Year for Y10/11. I moved into a similarly pastoral role a few years later, becoming a full time Church-based Youth Worker in London. I still taught the occasional RS lesson at the local Church of England High School, and supported the chaplain there.
I then completed a Master of Theology as my Ordination training, followed by three years in a training parish in London where pastoral work was a prominent feature. When I was coming to the end of my training post, I was keen to combine my background in teaching with my ordained ministry, and so I looked for school chaplaincy roles, working at Twyford Church of England High School in Acton, and then taking a parish role at New Hope Community Church in Reading where I became a school governor at my local Primary School, and was regularly involved with schools work and children’s groups.
I came to St Edmunds in 2021 as School Chaplain, I support students through my chaplaincy role, but also in delivering a variety of pastoral services including ‘Girls on Board’, mentoring, and as a ‘Drawing and Talking’ practitioner.
