As I write this blog, we are in the process of upgrading our ICT infrastructure – in effect, this is a complete network backbone replacement based on fibre optic cabling which will greatly improve the speed, reliability and flexibility of our network. It will also enable staff to use a wider range of educational technologies such as Century Tech and other adaptive learning platforms. I am reliably informed that the new cabling will run fifty times faster than its predecessor (which was pretty good in any case!) We have also introduced a new central network managing system which will enable us to identify and rectify problems more quickly and effectively. In addition, a new 10GB internet line has been installed into the Academic Hub. All our Wi-Fi access points have been replaced. A new door security system and CCTV system have also been installed, enhancing our site security.
This work has been led by our Network Support team of Tim Prior and Luke Sutton. Tim is actually retiring this summer this after 27 years of outstanding service. On his watch the school’s IT infrastructure has evolved dramatically. Indeed, during the pandemic it was Tim’s leadership and years of network enhancements that enabled us to switch overnight and seamlessly to a remote learning provision. This phase of work, which will result in a safer site and a faster and more robust network that will facilitate the latest in teaching and learning technologies is a fitting legacy for Tim. I thank him for this and for his brilliant work and friendship over many years.
