Unlocking Academic Potential: Supercurricular Success in Lower Sixth

In the St. Edmund’s Sixth Form, we place a clear emphasis on supercurricular engagement—encouraging students to explore their academic interests in depth and with purpose beyond the A-level specifications.

The Lower Sixth is a pivotal time for students to look beyond the curriculum and build a strong foundation for future university applications.

From attending university lectures and completing subject-specific online courses to entering national competitions and undertaking independent research, our Lower Sixth students are supported in pursuing opportunities that extend far beyond the classroom. These experiences are not simply “extras”—they are essential in shaping confident, intellectually curious learners.

Supercurricular activities provide the substance behind an outstanding personal statement. They enable students to demonstrate genuine enthusiasm for their chosen subject, reflect critically on what they have learned, and present a compelling, well-informed academic profile.

Using the MySupercurricular platform is central to our programme of study. A recent report from their staff highlights how our Lower Sixth students are actively engaging with academic content beyond the classroom. Our students are exploring subjects, writing structured reflections, engaging multiple formats (such as MOOCs and wider reading), and developing habits that support strong university applications. The report concluded that “this level of engagement reflects a strong culture of independent academic exploration within your sixth form”.

The result is not only stronger university applications, but developing students who are more confident, motivated, and prepared for the demands of higher education.
