Community and Charities

Charitable activities within the School and Chapel collections raise over £6000 every year for a mixture of local, national and international causes, for example:

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Pupils from Baker House donated £2 and dug out a pink item from their wardrobe – some even wearing pink from head-to-toe. Combined with the proceeds from a cake sale, the day raised over £170 towards the October campaign, timed to coincide with Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Nightingale Foundation and Orphanage in Romania

This orphanage adopts children with AID's. The money raised amounted to about £1200 and came from a variety of events. These included a wine and wisdom evening supported by pupils, staff, parents and members of the local community, sale of refreshments at sports day, an own clothes day and an Easter egg hunt for the pre-prep pupils.

Nordoff Robbins Music Therapy Centre in London

Approximately 40 members of staff participated in a challenge to learn a new musical instrument, mentored by pupils, to raise funds for the Nordoff Robbins Music Therapy Centre in London. The sponsorship plus money donated at a Junior School Music Festival amounted to £5200 and this money will be used to sponsor a student to study a two year MA in Music Therapy.

Royal Marsden Cancer Appeal

One of our principal activities was to raise funds for the Royal Marsden Cancer Appeal. This involved a sponsored cycle ride, a cake sale, a hunger lunch, an own clothes day, a Valentine's magazine and cake sales, a film night, and an Easter egg hunt and raffle. The Christingle service raised £220 for The Children's Society, Harvest Festival raised £110 and collected dried goods for the SCRINE foundation, and the Carol Service raised £1150 for The Children's Society. We continued to raise money for the Royal Marsden: the figure had amounted to £9500.

Peace in Nigeria

Abingdon House, the pre-prep and nursery school, is sponsoring a 4 year old girl called Peace in Nigeria. They have sold lollipops - to "lick poverty" - and have 'peace pots' for loose change to raise more money.

Sailing for life skills in South Africa

The school supports Cape Windjammers Education Trust in South Africa. They aim to use the power of sail training for life skill, leadership and career development as well as environmental education, thereby contributing to sustainable peace and development in the region. Because of the support from the School, the learner sailors were able to cast off for a 5 day long local sail training voyage aboard JML Rotary Scout.
