St Edmund's
This is St Edmund’s Stage Crew
The St Edmund’s Stage Crew are an integral part of the Drama Department. It’s commonly known throughout the theatre world that actors are nothing without their stage crew, and no where is this truer than in the St Edmund’s theatre. From true-to-life, historically accurate, naturalistic productions, to the comedic catastrophic chaos of falling Mischief and Farcical sets, there is always a team of pupils behind the scenes making it all happen.
Pupils have the opportunity to cover a huge range of backstage and stage craft skills, from stage management and show running, to technical sound and lighting design and operation, set and prop design, manufacture and decoration, to costume, hair, make-up and prosthetics; our crew learn to do it all. As well as facilitating pupils who aim to have careers in the backstage theatre world, a large proportion of our crew are budding thespians, wanting to enhance their knowledge of the theatre by gaining a 360 view of the worlds both on and off stage.
As well as enhancing pupils extra-curricular enrichment through opportunities to crew a range of performances including our main school production, A-Level and GCSE practical examinations, Drama Scholar performances and end of year ‘Festival On The Hill’ showcase extravaganzas, pupils also gain the opportunity to develop their theatrical understanding and expand their skills for their own GCSE and A-Level examinations, for both their practical and written work.
As an extension of this, pupils also have the opportunity to now study and take a Drama A-Level or GCSE examination through a technical and design pathway.
Backstage at St Edmund’s is simply a wonderful, unique place to be, nurturing artistic talents and minds, and inspiring creativity.
” Being part of stage crew is a brilliant stepping stone to going into the industry and has encouraged me to have the confidence in myself to pursue a career in costume design” – Betsy Coultard, L6
“Being part of the stage crew has expanded my friendship group, allowing me to work and connect with pupils from L5 all the way to the sixth form. This gives me a great chance to learn from the older pupils in the crew and in Drama, but has also given me a wider friendship group around the school” – – Joran Kearney, M5
