St Edmund's
A Week of Sporting Success at St Edmund’s
Netball
U15’s
St Edmund’s took on King’s Rochester on Tuesday in challenging wet conditions. With the surface slippery, St Edmund’s were a little tentative at the start of the match, allowing King’s Rochester to take an early lead in the first quarter.
However, St Edmund’s soon found their rhythm and began to settle into the game. Aggie and Harriet worked brilliantly together through the midcourt, feeding accurate balls into shooters Audrey and Ena. Our dynamic duo moved confidently around the D, putting into practice the strategies they had worked on in training and rarely missing a shot. By half time, St Edmund’s had edged ahead, leading 7–5.
The defensive unit of Gigi, Emma, Emily and Charlotte went into the second half with one clear instruction: win the ball back and look after it. They did exactly that, producing some fantastic interceptions and linking beautifully with the attack as the ball moved smoothly down the court.
With confidence growing, St Edmund’s dominated the second half and pulled away convincingly to secure an 18–7 victory.
A brilliant team performance all round. Well done to Ena and Charlotte for being named Star Players
1st VII
The 1st team took on Ashford this week. The team were still relishing last week’s win and were keen to keep their winning streak going. Goals flowed end to end in the first quarter; however, a few turnovers from Ashford allowed them to take a three-goal lead the first quarter.
The team were not deterred, knowing that with focus and a little concentration they could claw the goals back. In the second quarter, Ashford’s shooting was not as accurate, and the team calmly worked the ball up to our attacking players and into the attacking D making it hard for the Ashford defence to keep up, resulting in a half-time score of 13–13.
The third quarter was crucial, with composure and focus the aim of the game. Interceptions combined with tight marking in the Ashford D meant Ashford struggled to score and their heads began to drop. Beautiful play down the court made it hard for the Ashford defence to keep up, and extremely accurate shooting put the girls clearly in the lead, 25–15, going into the final quarter.
Maintaining their composure, St Edmund’s went into the final quarter with confidence, and even a change of positions from Ashford did not put them off. Strong play continued in both defence and attack, and with our shooters unable to miss, the match finished with a convincing final score of 34–20.
Boys Hockey
The boys U15A team played the only competitive fixtures this week starting with an after-school fixture against Kings School. The boys played some of the best hockey we have ever seen with Morgan scoring four goals. We eventually won 6-0.
The next afternoon it was a trip to Harvey Grammar School in Folkestone who boasted half a dozen county players in their side – a highly competitive match was played with the team losing narrowly 6-4 with 2 goals from Morgan and one each for Ben and Oscar – who was also voted player of the match.
Swimming
Away from the team sports and on to swimming and two pupils worthy of a special mention – Aran and Josie who both competed at the Kent county championships held at the London Aquatics Centre, home of the London 2012 competition.
Aren placed 10th in the 50m freestyle
Josie competed across both weekends of the competition and made the finals in four out of her five events. Her achievements are listed below
7th – 100m Backstroke
9th – 50m backstroke
