St Edmund’s Celebrates Outstanding GCSE Results

Head, Edward O’Connor said:

“Today is a great day of celebration for our Year 11 cohort.  This year’s GCSE results showed a strong improvement of 4% on last year in terms of the coveted Grade 9-8s awarded and an impressive, consistent 90% overall pass rate. These compare strongly with national statistics for all schools released today by the DfE.

St Edmunds GCSEs (2025) National Statistics (2025)

  St Edmund’s GCSEs (2025) National Statistics (2025)
Grade 9-8 (A*) 24% 12%
Grades 9-7 (A*-A) 35% 22%
Grades 9-6 (A*-B) 74% 35%
Grades 9-4 (A*-C) 90% 68%

The following departments achieved over 60% of results at grades 9-7 (A*-A): Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Drama, EAL, Film, French, Geography, German, Music and Physics.

There were also some many outstanding individual performances with six students earning four or more Grade 9s each. 18 students achieved a grade average of 7 (A) or better

Evan topped our rankings with 9 Grade 9’s and one Grade 8.

This demonstrates the ongoing commitment to high academic standards at St Edmund’s in accordance with our values which seek to promote Excellence, Intellectual Curiosity and Creativity.

However, it struck me that over the last academic year, members of this talented group also found time to…

  • Achieve great successes in the Chemistry Olympiad, Intermediate Physics Challenge and UK Mathematics Challenge
  • Reach the regional final of English Speaking Union Public Speaking Competition
  • Achieve outstanding results in Trinity School of Music and ABRSM instrumental, vocal and theory examinations
  • Undertake Duke of Edinburgh Award expeditions and Combined Cadet Force field days
  • Perform in top quality Drama and Music productions like The Canterbury Tales, The Festival on the Hill and our Gala Concert
  • Join the Talent Academy England Hockey Pathway
  • Compete successfully in a range of sports including football, hockey, tennis, cricket, athletics and eventing
  • Raise money for local and national charities

The combination of these experiences develops invaluable personal qualities that sit alongside these excellent examination results.

So St Edmund’s pupils not only complete Year 11 with a strong set of academic qualifications, but also have the communication, leadership and teamwork skills to move forward confidently and excel in their future careers.

Here we also recognise that academic results must be understood in the context of the individual journeys that pupils have navigated during their GCSE journey. These are not always straightforward. Indeed, many of the greatest achievements today are by those children who achieved Grade 4 or 5 outcomes after overcoming major personal challenges.

When we consider children in their individual context and are mindful of their wider achievements, these GCSE results are even more pleasing and notable.”

Chair of Governors Air Marshal Christopher Nickols said:

“We are delighted with this year’s GCSE results, which are a testament to the hard work and determination of our pupils. These achievements also reflect the outstanding teaching and dedication of our staff, whose commitment and professionalism are exemplary, and the invaluable encouragement and support of parents. Together, this partnership creates the foundations that enable our young people to thrive as individuals and achieve success in all aspects of the curriculum.”
