Partnerships
We are proud to work with several local schools, charities and agencies and seek to play an active, supportive role in the East Kent community.
Our facilities are used by many local organisations for charitable, recreational and educational purposes.
East Kent Schools Together (EKST)
St Edmund’s is really pleased and proud to be involved in the EKST collaboration, which involves Canterbury Christ Church University (CCCU) and 6 local schools from the independent and state sectors. The core aspirations of the East Kent Schools together project are:
- Raising aspirations
- Widening Horizons
- Improving confidence
- Enhancing wellbeing
- Developing team work skills and meaningful interactions
Recent initiatives being worked upon by pupils and staff across the cluster are:
Working with a live model in the Old Gym, students explored quick sketches, silhouettes, and expressive techniques using charcoal, ink, and pastels. Initially daunting, the experience quickly became an exciting opportunity to understand shape, movement, and light in a new way.
“It was a fascinating experience! Drawing from life helped me see shapes more clearly and translate them onto paper with confidence.” – Dominika
A fantastic creative session with a great atmosphere!
A huge thank you to our St Edmund’s Science teacher, Ben Jones, as well as James Bennett and the team at Canterbury Christ Church University, for making this fantastic opportunity possible. Experiences like these provide our students with invaluable hands-on learning and help them develop essential skills for the future.@eastkentschoolstogether
SCIENCE
During Science Week we were visited by year 4 and 5 pupils from Preston and Wingham primary schools. In Chemistry, Dr Tebbs-Warner led an interactive session covering the topic of Chemical Reactions. They discussed what reactions were, and their signs and changes that we would observe. Pupils experienced some explosive, cold, colourful and smelly demonstrations, before trying their hand at some simple experiments and noting down the changes they observed. In Biology, Mr Clapp’s session saw pupils learning what makes plants green. The pupils blended spinach leaves with a chemical called a buffer to keep the contents of the cells intact. They then filtered the blended spinach (or ‘chemical spinach soup’ as Mr Clapp called it) to produce a green liquid. The pupils then put their tubes of green spinach extract in the centrifuge which spun the small cell fragments to the bottom. We then poured away the clear liquid and added a little more buffer. The pupils then took one drop of this and put it on a microscope slide. Pupils were then able to see the tiny chloroplasts, the parts of the plants cells that make the leaves green and are where photosynthesis happens. Each pupil saw chloroplasts and they were excited to use the centrifuge and the microscopes. Thanks especially to the sixth-form science ambassadors that assisted with the sessions.
MUSIC
The EKCO and St Edmund’s Symphony Orchestra are open to pupils in other schools. St Edmund’s School is the proud home of the East Kent Children’s Orchestra (EKCO). The orchestra was established 10 years ago to provide an opportunity for young musicians from our school and the wider community to play in a 40+ strong symphony orchestra. The EKCO is open to musicians up to and including Year 8 and rehearsals are held very Wednesday at 4.30pm in the St Edmund’s Recital Hall. We proudly have members in each ensemble from other schools.
St Edmund’s Choral Society for anyone in the local community, friends and parents of the school.
